Moving tips: How to move IKEA furniture?

IKEA furniture is ultra popular because it is stylish, practical, and cheap. But, if you are moving to a new home, moving IKEA furniture can present a big problem. Not only is it difficult to disassemble (you remember how hard it was to put together!), but it can break or parts can get lost if you don’t take the right precautions. To make sure your belongings stay safe, follow these tips when moving with IKEA furniture.

1. Disassemble for safe transport

With small pieces of IKEA furniture like nightstands, you probably won’t want to disassemble them. But, it is usually best to disassemble larger pieces of IKEA furniture like bookshelves. The first reason for this is that the furniture will take up less space. It will also be easier to move and you reduce the risk of injuries if moving it yourself. Finally, you should disassemble the furniture because it actually helps keep the furniture safe. Those little screws and parts in IKEA furniture aren’t meant to take a lot of pressure. If the furniture gets bent in the wrong direction, then those screws could pop out of their sockets and completely destroy the furniture.

2. No instruction manual?

You probably didn’t save the instruction manual that came with your IKEA furniture. Don’t worry. You can also download assembly instructions from the IKEA website. Even with the instruction manual, it is still a good idea to take a photo of the furniture before you disassemble it. This will come in handy when you are putting the furniture back together.

3. Use plastic baggies for parts

Get some plastic baggies and keep all of the screws and other parts of the IKEA furniture in these. If the furniture has a lot of parts, then you will even want to separate these parts and put them in multiple baggies. Label the baggies, such as “bottom shelf” and “top shelf”. Then, use packing tape to tape the baggies to the furniture so you won’t lose them.

4. Put padding between panels

The chipboard that most IKEA furniture is made of can easily be scratched or damaged. Keep it safe by putting layers of newspaper or towels between the panels.

5. Be careful when tightening screws

One of the most important things to remember when moving IKEA furniture is that you should not over-tighten the screws when reassembling. If you tighten the screws too much, it will strip the particle board inside and the screws won’t have anything to grab onto. This will result in wobbly, useless furniture!
